Interview with Local Artist, Katie Porterfield
We are excited to introduce this new series of interviews with fashionable women who we adore. We hope you’ll enjoy getting to know them too! Up first – Katie Porterfield!
Artist and Art Teacher at St. Thomas More School
3) DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE.
Eclectic. I don’t really know of a better word. I like to dip a toe in a little bit of everything. I typically see a piece and fall in love, then build around it.
4) WHAT IS YOUR “GO TO” OUTFIT?
Jeans (usually with paint stains), vintage embroidered top and a pair of Swedish wooden clogs. I’ve been wearing clogs since I was a little girl. Clogs are definitely a staple in my closet! My favorite brands are No.6, Maguba and Hasbeens.
5) WHAT IS YOUR DATE NIGHT STYLE?
I have been really into skirts lately. A great pattern maxi skirt or a midi that has a twist, like a frayed hem or a drop waist - perfection! Then I keep it pretty simple with a white tank or tee or a tied-up oxford.
6) WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO SHOP?
I could go into a broom closet and find something to buy. I love shopping, but I love a good deal. I love the hunt! Whilden’s semi-annual sale bins were totally up my alley. I love getting lost in digging for the perfect piece. I’m a huge fan of Etsy too. I could search for hours for vintage clothing. Some of my latest Etsy obsessions are vintage block print tops, embroidered skirts and handmade Colombian earrings.
7) TELL US YOUR MUST-HAVE COCKTAIL.
Dirty Martini, but we have a very love/hate relationship.
8) WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANT IN CHAPEL HILL?
In the winter, sitting at the bar at Jujube. It’s so cozy and delicious. When it’s warm, the porch at the Carolina Inn is my pick. It’s so great for a casual rendezvous with a group of friends.
9) WHO IS THE ARTIST YOU ARE MOST INSPIRED BY?
Gosh, there are SO many! Two of my longtime favorites are Mark Rothko and Richard Diebenkorn. Keri Rosenthal and Stephanie Shank are two artists that I’m really inspired by. I am constantly discovering new artists that I love and admire. Instagram and social media have really helped artists gain more exposure and reach a broader range of people.
10) WHAT COLOR WILL YOU BE WEARING THIS SPRING?
Lilac!! It goes with everything and looks great on everyone! It is the new blush! I’ve been tying lilac into my paintings recently and I’m obsessed. I even just revamped my throw pillows at home in lilac and chartreuse. I love it!
11) WHAT IS YOUR TOP VACATION SPOT?
Grandfather Mountain. It is so incredibly beautiful year-round, but especially in the summer. I love hiking and painting when I’m up there. The fresh air and scenery are so inspiring.
12) WHAT WOULD WE CATCH YOU WEARING ON THE WEEKEND?
An easy, casual maxi dress that I can throw on and dress up or down. And clogs for sure.
13) LAST BOOK YOU READ?
“Where the Sidewalk Ends” by Shel Silverstein. I am working on an art and poetry exhibit with my 2nd graders at school.
14) WHERE CAN WE FIND YOU OTHER THAN MAY 9TH AT THE STORE?

15) ADD ANY THING ELSE!
