NAME?

Julia Kemp Fox

OCCUPATION?

Owner and Clinical Director at Medical Day Spa of Chapel Hill.  (I occasionally also help out at UNC’s outpatient infusion centers doing chemo, neuro, and GI infusion therapy.)

HOW DID YOU GET INTO YOUR INDUSTRY?

After years of abusing my skin in the sun and on tanning beds, I developed skin cancer – a real wake-up call.  I became a fanatic about skin health and skin care.  My passion is helping people achieve their skin and aesthetic goals and feel better about themselves by minimizing the signs of aging in a natural way.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR BEST SKIN CARE TIPS?

• SUNSCREEN use is the best skincare tip!  Not only will you minimize your risk of skin cancer, but you will significantly reduce premature aging and wrinkles.

• NEVER go to bed without washing your face! And removing makeup!

• Most people are over moisturizing their skin because they assume/think they are dry and need moisturizer.  In fact, you need to activate and stimulate the cells in the skin – like exercise for the body – and that will restore the skin’s natural moisture balance and vitality. The best way to do this is with vitamin A – Retinol or Retin-A.  Most people, especially women, are spending hundreds – if not thousands – of dollars on skin creams at department stores or drugstores.  It smells good, it may feel good, your skin looks good temporarily.  But it doesn’t actually work or improve the skin significantly.  For truly healthy skin, we need  Vitamin A, antioxidants, and we need to repair the skin’s DNA with growth factors.  As my favorite dermatologist Dr Zein Obagi says, “If you want to feel good, have a martini.  Real skin health takes work.”

FOR SOMEONE WHO HAS NEVER HAD BOTOX, CAN YOU EXPLAIN THE BENEFITS?

Botox has been around for many decades and has been used safely for a variety of purposes.  Botox – as well as Dysport and Xeomin – are neuromodulators that work as a shield between the brain and the muscle so that, even if your brain is telling a muscle to move–whether this is on purpose or because of misfiring neurons – the muscle will stay still. A “sprinkle” of Botox (as I like to describe it) can help minimize muscle movement slightly so that lines across the forehead, between the brow, and around the eyes do not become permanent, which gives us a more awake, less tired appearance.  What many people don’t know is how many medical uses there are for Botox, including reducing sweating, correcting a droopy brow, to stop eye twitching, and as a treatment for Bell’s Palsy, migraine headaches and TMJ.

IF THERE WAS ONE SKIN CARE PRODUCT YOU HAD TO HAVE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

There are several I love, but sunscreen is where it all starts.  Close behind are retinol, Vitamin C, and growth factor.

WHAT’S YOUR GO-TO OUTFIT FOR WORK?

Scrubs by Wear Figs! Most days, scrubs are my work choice, but I do love to wear a great pair of pants from Mother or Marie Oliver with a blazer or jacket.

WHAT WOULD WE FIND YOU WEARING ON THE WEEKEND?

Jeans and a t-shirt and jacket, although my camo pants from Mother are seeing a lot of wear these days, too.

WHAT COLOR ARE YOU LOVING TO WEAR THIS SEASON?

Navy blue is my favorite color for every season.  But I’ve actually been wearing a lot of blue-green/turquoise this spring.

IF THERE WAS ONE PIECE OF CLOTHING YOU COULD NOT LIVE WITHOUT, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

A great jean jacket I’ve had for years and wear with everything.

WHAT WAS THE LAST AMAZING BEAUTY PRODUCT YOU USED?

I love all ZO Skin Health products, but the last amazing product I used was the Rejuvenation eye gel pads from Patchology.  I wore them on the plane returning from Greece and they totally depuffed my eyes after vacation!
